VARIABLE RADIUS HELIX POTENTIOMETER: PRACTICAL ISSUES

Recently a new approach to constructing potentiometers with non-linear taper was proposed. Its main idea is reach dependence of output voltage on rotation angle using helical resistive element variable radius the helix and cross-section. As it has been shown before, problem calculation such potentiometer solution for all continually differentiable tapers, but usefulness this construction still unknown. In current paper we review historical modern types potentiometers, including ones; materials manufacturing pots; possible tapers type construction; potential applications. section 1 constructions are analyzed. Most suitable implementation variable-radius-helix chosen. A generic way mandrel machining tools computer numeric control. 2 several predefined shapes calculated. comparison between appropriate bounds VRH conventional multi-turn wirewound pitch carried out. 3 different fields applications reviewed, usage in works robotics. VHR proposed use manual control system vehicle cab heating controllinstead piecewise-linear taper. 4 conclusions made perspectives potentiometer, its pros cons. Main tasks further research outlined.
